Consider juxtaposing the mundanities of daily life with the drama of larger political/environmental/social events, as Ilya Kaminsky does in his poem “We Lived Happily During The War.” Notice how, after describing America falling “invisible house by invisible house,” Kaminsky inserts a line that simply states “I took a chair outside and watched the sun.” When used in such a way, even the most mundane life events can become powerful statements.
