1.10 Character Goal

The goal of the protagonist is established in the beginning of the story, and it is to resolve the main problem that she is dealt. In a work of flash fiction or microfiction, the writer needs to address that conflict quickly. This main character has one goal in mind and will do whatever she can to achieve it. As the writer, you need to ask the big dramatic questions:

  • What is the conflict in the story and what is the inciting incident that creates this conflict?
  • Why should my main character’s goal be to solve this conflict?
  • What is at stake and why is it so important?
